The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for the immediate resignation of Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, accusing him of making partisan political comments and compromising the neutrality of the Judiciary.
The demand follows remarks attributed to the Chief Justice during visits to the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), where he praised the performance of some state institutions.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie reportedly questioned what Ghana had been doing over the past eight years while commenting on recent developments at the institutions.
In a statement issued on Thursday, September 3, 2026, the NPP said it received the comments with “profound shock and disgust,” alleging that they suggested the current NDC administration was performing better than the previous NPP government.
The party argued that such comments were inconsistent with the constitutional independence and impartiality expected of the head of the Judiciary.
“This is not the language of a Chief Justice. It is the language of a party propagandist,” the NPP stated.
The party further raised concerns about remarks it attributed to the Chief Justice regarding the need to ensure the President’s agenda succeeds, questioning the implications for cases involving persons associated with the NPP.
The NPP also alleged selective justice in the handling of certain cases and criticised what it described as deteriorating infrastructure within the Judiciary.
It is demanding an immediate and unreserved retraction of the alleged partisan comments. Failing that, the party said the Chief Justice should resign.
The allegations have not been independently established, and the Chief Justice and the Judicial Service are yet to publicly respond.
