The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has attributed the widespread power outage recorded across parts of the country on Thursday, August 20, 2026, to a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line.
According to GRIDCo, the fault occurred at about 4:30 a.m., triggering the automatic shutdown of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal power plants.
GRIDCo explained that the automatic shutdown was part of its protection mechanisms designed to safeguard the stability and integrity of the National Interconnected Transmission System.
The incident disrupted electricity supply to several parts of the country, including communities in Accra and other regions.
GRIDCo said its engineers, in collaboration with other power sector agencies, immediately isolated the affected transmission line and began a safe and systematic restoration of the power system.
The company said power had already been restored to some affected areas, while restoration efforts were ongoing for customers who remained without electricity.
“All relevant technical teams have been mobilised and are working to achieve full restoration as quickly and safely as possible,” GRIDCo said.
The company apologised to affected customers for the inconvenience caused by the disruption and assured the public that updates would be provided as restoration efforts continued.
GRIDCo also appealed to the public for patience and cooperation as engineers worked to restore power fully.
