King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the monarch of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom who ascended the throne at the age of three, has died at 34.
The announcement was made by the Prime Minister of Tooro Kingdom, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who said the king passed away at about 10:00 p.m. local time on Thursday. He did not disclose the cause of death.
King Oyo became the world’s youngest reigning monarch in 1995 after succeeding his late father, Rukirabasaija Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. He was officially crowned on September 12 that year.
Although Uganda operates as a republic with an elected president, the country continues to recognise several traditional kingdoms that existed before colonial rule. While these monarchies no longer exercise significant political authority, they remain highly influential in cultural and social affairs.
Tooro Kingdom is located in western Uganda, close to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Before news of his death was officially confirmed, Uganda’s State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs, Balaam Barugahara, had indicated that the king was receiving medical treatment in the United States.
Describing the monarch’s death as an “immeasurable loss,” the Tooro Prime Minister said King Oyo, who was unmarried, had left an heir, assuring the public that the royal succession would continue.
News of the king’s death sparked widespread mourning across Uganda, particularly on social media, with political leaders, public figures and citizens expressing their condolences.
Ugandan opposition leader and musician Bobi Wine described the development as “most devastating news” and prayed for the king’s soul to rest in eternal peace.
King Oyo’s youth had been viewed as an important part of his leadership of Tooro. In a birthday message in April, the kingdom’s Prime Minister praised him as a monarch who remained connected to the experiences of his generation.
He said the king’s youth should not be seen as a weakness but rather as a source of energy, fresh ideas and the courage to envision a new future for the Tooro Kingdom.
The death of King Oyo marks the end of a remarkable reign that began when he was only three years old and made him an internationally recognised figure as the world’s youngest reigning monarch.
