NPP Leaders Mourn Founding Member Samuel Odoi-Sykes

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin have expressed condolences following the death of veteran NPP figure and founding member, Samuel Arthur Odoi-Sykes.
The NPP announced Odoi-Sykes’ death in a statement issued by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, on Wednesday, October 8.
Dr Bawumia described Odoi-Sykes as an important figure in the history of the NPP, particularly for his role in leading the party to its first general election victory in the Fourth Republic in 2000. He praised the late politician’s contribution to the party and the country, extending his sympathies to his family and loved ones.
Mr Afenyo-Markin also paid tribute to Odoi-Sykes, describing him as part of a generation of patriotic leaders who made significant sacrifices to strengthen Ghana’s democratic system. According to the Minority Leader, Odoi-Sykes played a key role in the NPP’s historic victory in the 2000 elections, which resulted in a peaceful transfer of political power and further consolidated Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
Afenyo-Markin also highlighted Odoi-Sykes’ earlier parliamentary career, noting that his tenure as Minority Leader was interrupted by the 1981 military coup that ended Ghana’s Third Republic and dissolved Parliament.
Despite the disruption, he said Odoi-Sykes remained committed to parliamentary democracy and the development of strong democratic institutions.
The Minority Leader said the late NPP stalwart’s legacy would extend beyond the political positions he held, noting that his contribution to democratic governance and public service would continue to be remembered.
He extended condolences to Odoi-Sykes’ family, loved ones and members of the Danquah-Busia-Dombo political tradition, describing him as a founding figure whose contribution to Ghana’s democratic development remains significant.
