ECG to Begin Nationwide Meter Audit Exercise

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced plans to commence a nationwide meter audit exercise across all its operational areas to reduce commercial losses, improve revenue assurance and combat electricity theft.

In a public announcement, the power distributor said the exercise would involve the inspection and verification of all prepaid and postpaid meters, Special Load Tariff (SLT) installations and associated wiring to ensure the integrity of metering systems and the accurate measurement and billing of electricity consumption.

ECG indicated that the announcement serves as the official notice of the exercise, adding that no further prior notices, appointment letters or advance notifications would be issued.

The company has therefore advised customers, landlords, estate managers, property managers, facility managers and security personnel not to deny, restrict or delay authorised ECG personnel access to their premises solely because they have not received a separate notification letter.

The announcement referenced Regulation 4(h) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Customer Service) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2413), which requires consumers to grant public utility employees or authorised agents safe and reasonable access to their premises to read meters or inspect utility equipment, subject to the prescribed identification and access procedures.

ECG stressed that all employees and authorised agents participating in the exercise would carry official identification cards.

To prevent impersonation and protect customers from fraud, the company has urged the public to verify the identities of field personnel before granting them access.

Customers can verify staff through ECG’s Customer Call Centre on 0302 611 611 or by dialling *226# on any mobile network.

To use the USSD verification service, customers are required to dial *226#, select Option 5 for staff verification, and enter the six-digit verification code provided by the staff member.

The staff member’s full name, region and district will then be displayed for confirmation before access is granted.

ECG has encouraged the public to contact its call centre or reach the company through its official social media platforms, @ECGghOfficial, for further information.

The company says the nationwide exercise forms part of its efforts to strengthen electricity metering, ensure accurate billing and improve service delivery to consumers.
