Dr. Ken Ashigbey Blames Politics For Galamsey Failure

Convener of the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining, Dr. Ken Ashigbey, has warned that Ghana’s fight against illegal mining will not succeed unless political interference in the sector is brought to an end.

Speaking on the Super Morning Show on Thursday, July 16, Dr. Ashigbey accused successive governments of failing to show the political will required to deal decisively with individuals involved in galamsey, particularly those with political connections.

He said the practice of protecting supporters of political parties has weakened efforts to enforce the law and address the environmental damage caused by illegal mining.

Dr. Ashigbey noted that claims suggesting illegal miners associated with the previous administration have been replaced by individuals linked to the current government reflect a larger challenge.

According to him, the issue is not about whether NDC or NPP-affiliated individuals are involved, but rather the failure to apply the law equally regardless of political affiliation. He added that some illegal miners engaging in violent activities are emboldened by the belief that they have political protection.

Dr. Ashigbey called on the government to tackle galamsey without fear or favour, stressing that the fight against environmental destruction must not be politicised.

He also urged the public to ignore misinformation surrounding the issue and support meaningful discussions aimed at finding lasting solutions.

The Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining Convener further commended the media, civil society groups and anti-galamsey advocates for keeping attention on the crisis.

He warned that Ghana’s forests and water bodies face severe threats if urgent action is not taken, adding that the country cannot continue to trade its natural resources for political interests.

“The time for compromise is over,” he said, urging all stakeholders to unite in protecting Ghana’s environment.
