Manhyia South MP Granted GH¢50m Bail…

The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has been granted bail of GH¢50 million with three sureties after reporting to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The legislator appeared at EOCO’s offices at about 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, to cooperate with investigators handling an ongoing case.

His appearance came after the Accra High Court issued an arrest warrant following EOCO’s claim that previous attempts to secure his attendance for questioning had been unsuccessful.

The investigation involves allegations including criminal conspiracy, financial loss to SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering and tax-related offences, among other suspected breaches of the law.

Mr Baffour Awuah has denied receiving GH¢2.2 million in legal fees and has also disputed EOCO’s version of events regarding its earlier attempts to have him report for questioning.

EOCO has stressed that investigations are still ongoing and urged the public not to draw conclusions about the MP’s culpability until the investigative and judicial processes have been completed.

Meanwhile, the case has prompted a response from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who has called on EOCO to intensify efforts to identify and prosecute individuals allegedly financing and coordinating drug trafficking activities connected to Ghana.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, October 1, the Effutu MP questioned what he described as EOCO’s emphasis on investigating opposition politicians, arguing that the agency should demonstrate similar urgency in dealing with major narcotics-related cases.

Mr Afenyo-Markin further urged EOCO to look beyond individual suspects and investigate the alleged financiers and organisers behind drug trafficking networks linked to Ghana.

His comments come amid heightened public interest in Ghana-related narcotics investigations and the manner in which EOCO handles cases involving economic and organised crime.

The investigation involving Mr Baffour Awuah remains ongoing, with EOCO yet to complete its work.
