FIFA President Gianni Infantino could face scrutiny from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) after human rights group FairSquare announced plans to file a complaint accusing him of breaching political neutrality rules through his public support for U.S. President Donald Trump.
FairSquare said it will petition the IOC over what it described as Infantino’s “repeated breach of political neutrality rules.” The move follows an earlier complaint submitted to FIFA’s Ethics Committee in December 2025.
The group’s complaint to FIFA cited several instances where Infantino allegedly expressed support for Trump’s policies and actions. It is also calling for an investigation into FIFA’s decision to create the FIFA Peace Prize and award it to President Trump, questioning whether the process followed the organisation’s procedures.
Infantino, who has served as an IOC member since 2020, is accused by FairSquare of violating Article 15 of the FIFA Code of Ethics, which requires officials to maintain political neutrality in their official duties.
Under the FIFA ethics code, breaches of the neutrality rule can attract sanctions including a minimum fine of 10,000 Swiss francs and a ban from football-related activities for up to two years.
FairSquare is also seeking clarity on whether the decision to introduce the annual Peace Prize and award it to Trump was approved by the FIFA Council or taken solely by Infantino.
“If Mr Infantino acted unilaterally and without any statutory authority, this should be considered an abuse of power,” the group said.
IOC President Kirsty Coventry said the ethics commission would review any complaint officially submitted against Infantino.
FIFA’s Investigatory Chamber confirmed it had received FairSquare’s complaint in December but has not indicated whether a formal investigation has begun.The complaint comes amid growing calls from FairSquare and other groups for reforms within FIFA. The organisation recently launched its “Reboot” campaign, which advocates for changes in FIFA’s governance.
The Norwegian Football Federation and 50 Members of the European Parliament have also expressed support for the complaint, urging FIFA’s Ethics Committee to examine whether Infantino breached political neutrality rules.
Infantino has denied involvement in some recent decisions linked to Trump, including a review of U.S. striker Folarin Balogun’s suspension after Trump reportedly appealed the decision. FIFA later cleared the player to feature in a World Cup knockout match.
