About 55,000 candidates who sat for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) may not secure placement into Senior High Schools (SHSs) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTSs) due to failure to meet the required qualification criteria.
The disclosure was made by the Coordinator of the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) Secretariat, Sherif Sulemana, on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, September 3, 2026.
According to Mr Sulemana, nearly 620,000 candidates sat for this year’s BECE, but only about 565,000 have been deemed qualified for placement.
He explained that a key requirement for placement is for candidates to pass both English Language and Mathematics.
“Those people have not failed in either English or Mathematics. So, you are disqualified from placement if you have failed in either English or Mathematics,” he said.
Mr Sulemana noted that the examination results showed that a number of candidates recorded very low marks in some of the core subjects, which contributed to their failure to meet the placement requirements.
He disclosed that approximately 55,000 candidates did not qualify for placement under the stated criteria.
The overall performance data also showed that only about 17% of candidates, representing approximately 107,000 students, obtained aggregates between 6 and 18.
Meanwhile, about 35% of candidates, equivalent to approximately 252,000 students, recorded aggregates ranging from 6 to 24.
The figures have emerged as authorities prepare to begin the placement process for qualified candidates into SHSs and SHTSs across the country.
