The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has announced the implementation of a peak-hour contra-flow traffic arrangement dedicated exclusively to Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services across three primary commuting corridors entering Accra’s Central Business District.
Taking effect on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, the temporary traffic configuration will operate daily during high-density morning peak hours from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM and evening peak periods from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
The intervention targets three major transit arterial routes known for severe gridlock namely the Amasaman–Accra, Adenta–Accra, and Kasoa–Accra corridors. Under the system, designated sections along these highways will permit authorised Ayalolo buses to travel against the standard flow of traffic to bypass heavy vehicular queues.
Authorities emphasised that the priority contra-flow lanes are strictly reserved for public transit buses, explicitly prohibiting access to private vehicles, taxis, commercial minibuses, and unauthorized road users.
The multi-agency initiative is being executed in partnership with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service, the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive, and the Department of Urban Roads to maintain strict enforcement and ensure commuter safety.
Government officials anticipate that the dedicated routing strategy will dramatically improve bus departure punctuality, shorten overall transit times into the commercial capital, and encourage commuters to transition from private cars to high capacity public transport options.
