More than 3,000 people have been forced out of their homes after massive flooding hit the Hohoe Municipality in the Volta Region. Over 400 houses have been badly affected after River Dayi overflowed its banks following heavy rains across the area.
The situation is very serious in places like Zongo, where more than half of the community is completely under water. Many families had to pack their belongings quickly and leave as the fast-moving floodwaters spread through their rooms. Local authorities have moved many of the affected people into school classrooms to sleep while they try to find better shelter for them.
Speaking on live television on Monday, September 28, 2026, the Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, said the damage is too big for the local assembly to handle alone. He begged good-hearted individuals, business groups, and organizations to quickly send food, mattresses, and relief items to help save the suffering people.
The MP praised NADMO and officers from the security agencies for coming in quickly to rescue people who were trapped in their homes, which helped prevent deaths. Although the rain has stopped, floodwaters are still rising, so emergency workers remain on high alert to keep families safe.
