FIFA Increases 2027 Women’s World Cup Preparation Funding to $2.5m per Team

FIFA has approved an increase in preparation funding for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, with each qualified national football association set to receive $2.5 million (£1.9 million) ahead of the tournament in Brazil.

The decision was made by the Bureau of the FIFA Council following a council meeting held in Zurich, Switzerland, on October 15, 2026.

Under the revised financial framework, the distribution package will cover prize money, preparation funds and payments under the FIFA Club Benefits Programme.

FIFA also confirmed that players participating in the women’s tournament will receive the same level of services provided to their male counterparts at the 2026 Men’s World Cup.

The governing body further announced that any surplus generated by the competition will be distributed among participating member associations, with a portion specifically allocated to players.

Additional details regarding the financial arrangements are expected to be discussed at the next FIFA Council meeting in December 2026.

In other decisions, FIFA named the United States as the host of the inaugural FIFA Women’s Club World Cup, scheduled for January 5 to 30, 2028.

According to FIFA, the country’s experience in hosting its competitions, established infrastructure and services, as well as growing stakeholder interest in women’s football, influenced the selection.

Qualification for the new club competition will be determined by teams’ performances in their respective confederations’ leading club tournaments over four years, covering the seasons ending in 2024 and 2027.

FIFA also adjusted the schedule for the final phase of the 2027 FIFA Women’s Champions Cup, which is set to take place in Miami from January 26 to 31. The two semi-final matches will be played on separate days to improve the competition’s visibility.

Meanwhile, Qatar has been selected to host the final three matches of the 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

The FIFA Derby of the Americas will be played on December 9, followed by the FIFA Challenger Cup on December 12. The tournament final is scheduled for December 16.

FIFA also confirmed that the 2027 FIFA Under-20 World Cup will be jointly hosted by Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan from September 17 to October 9, 2027.

Additionally, the Bureau appointed a normalisation committee to oversee the Nigeria Football Federation, with its mandate expected to end no later than May 31, 2027.

The decisions form part of FIFA’s broader plans for the development and administration of international and club football, with further discussions on the Women’s World Cup financial distribution model expected in December.
