Access to maternal and child healthcare in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region is set to improve significantly following the commissioning of two new 15-bed Mother and Child Health Units at the Volo and Fodzoku Health Centres.
The facilities, established by Engage Now Africa-Ghana in partnership with the Ghana Health Service (GHS), are expected to serve more than 19,000 people in the two communities and surrounding areas.
The new units will provide essential maternal and child health services, including dedicated spaces for childbirth and newborn care, bringing quality healthcare closer to residents who previously had to travel long distances to access such services.
Speaking at the commissioning, the Country Director of Engage Now Africa-Ghana, Cecilia Amankwah, stressed that safe childbirth facilities should not be considered a privilege.
“Safe and appropriate environments for childbirth are not a luxury but a basic requirement for dignified, quality maternal care,” she said.
She emphasised that investments in maternal health infrastructure must lead to safer deliveries, healthier mothers and newborns, and better outcomes for families.
The facilities will operate under the Ghana Health Service, strengthening healthcare delivery in Volo, Fodzoku and neighbouring communities where access to adequate health infrastructure has remained limited.
The project was fully funded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as part of broader efforts to improve maternal and child healthcare in underserved communities.
With the two facilities now operational, thousands of residents are expected to benefit from improved access to essential maternal and child health services closer to home.
