Lisandro Martinez Apologises for Criticising Manchester United Hierarchy

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has apologised for his controversial comments about the club’s leadership following their Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

The Argentine centre-back had criticised the club’s management, arguing that head coach Michael Carrick had not been provided with a strong enough squad to compete effectively.

After meeting with United’s leadership and the manager on Thursday, Martinez issued a public apology, describing the discussions as positive and open.

In a statement shared on social media, the 28-year-old admitted that the disappointment of the defeat had influenced his comments.

He explained that his passion for football and frustration over the result had caused him to express his views at an inappropriate time and place, adding that he regretted his actions.

Martinez also reaffirmed his confidence in his teammates, Carrick and everyone working to improve the club’s fortunes. Reports indicated that the defender had been fined for his remarks.

The controversy began after United’s defeat to Atletico, when Martinez called for greater investment in the squad and demanded more from technical director Jason Wilcox.

His comments attracted criticism, with former United captain Roy Keane describing the situation at his former club as “a bit of a circus” during an appearance on The Overlap podcast.

In his latest statement, Martinez stressed the importance of unity within the club, acknowledging that his remarks had not helped bring players and management together.

He added that everyone at Manchester United was working towards the common goal of restoring the club’s success and satisfying its supporters.

Attention has now shifted to Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Leeds United at Elland Road, although it remains uncertain whether Carrick will include Martinez in his starting lineup.

Despite the apology, questions remain about the defender’s long-term future at Old Trafford. His current contract expires at the end of the season, but Manchester United have the option to extend it by another 12 months.

Although the club considers the dispute over his comments resolved, a final decision on whether to activate the contract extension is still pending.
