NACOC In Crisis!

Member of Parliament for Effia, Isaac Boamah-Nyarko, has sounded a grave alarm over severe funding shortages and operational logistical gaps crippling the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), warning that these systemic failures severely undermine Ghana’s fight against drug trafficking.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, September 30, 2026 and monitored by MFNews, the lawmaker revealed that NACOC’s annual budgetary allocations have seen drastic cuts over recent years.
This underfunding has left the state anti-narcotics body lacking fundamental tools, including specialised cargo scanners and dedicated drug-testing laboratories.
As a result, officers are forced to rely on third-party facilities to verify seized narcotics, causing significant delays in criminal investigations and prosecutions.
Highlighting the acute mobility crisis, Boamah-Nyarko disclosed that NACOC operates with a dilapidated fleet of only 26 to 27 vehicles nationwide.
More critically, he pointed out dangerous security risks faced by field officers, asserting that regional branches such as the Takoradi facility lack basic weapons in their armouries while tasked with confronting heavily armed transnational drug cartels.
Calling for an immediate parliamentary inquiry into the commission’s institutional lapses, the MP argued that isolated parliamentary questions will not solve the crisis.
He insisted that Parliament must confront these logistical deficits frontally to force executive action and re-arm NACOC before the country’s anti-drug infrastructure collapses entirely.
